Square Deal Garage
Built circa 1937
Owned and operated by Mr. Reginald Greenlaw (cousin of Linda Greenlaw of The Perfect Storm fame), the Square Deal Garage was a service station, repair shop (both automotive and marine), auto sales lot (Greenlaw would only sell and drive Chryslers, Plymouths and Dodges) and fuel distributorship. During World War 11, Reginald went to work at the Bath shipyard, doing his part for the war effort, while his dad Leroy ran the garage until his return in 1945. The station sold Tydol gas up until about 1970 when it changed over to Mobil.
This information was gathered from 91-year-old Owen Gross who started working summers at the garage when he was sixteen in 1941. He speaks of Reggie as a “very generous and enterprising man; a man of many talents”. A selectman of the town, Greenlaw got his nickname, “Captain Crash,” due to the fact that he crashed his small plane more than once and walked away unscathed each time.
